An Inconvenient Sequel Needs More Convenient Solutions, Especially Before the Flood

I waited for “An Inconvenient Sequel” to show us solutions, but instead it spends too much time showing us how much worse the problem has gotten since the first movie. I did download Gore’s Truth in 10 slideshow because it has useful, concise information. But honestly, this would get him a decent grade in a boring class. If giving PowerPoint presentations haven’t been enough after all these years, why would anyone think that there should be more of us giving the same presentation?? (And why is he still relying on PowerPoint?! Someone teach him a new app!) It’s not that people don’t know the problem. The majority of us with basic science knowledge have been on board. If the intended audience is the deniers, why would they even watch this documentary? You can’t lecture the truth to the willfully ignorant. The Inconvenient movie preaches to the choir about a problem we’ve been singing about for years.  It encourages us to speak truth to power, yet shows us how futile it’s been for a man who was almost president to try to do the same. Instead of showing us more depressing news, we need to learn more success stories, spread more tangible hope, and most importantly- take empowering actions. It was promising to experience the film at a screening organized by local activists so that we can stay connected and take collective actions as a community. But if you watched the first movie, you can skip this one (unless you really like data/graphs and watching an old man persist in his noble struggle, inter-cut with people suffering environmental disasters). Spend your time watching a better film… Before the Flood.

That movie doesn’t waste time trying to convert climate change deniers. It acknowledges that the problem exists, and moves on. People who don’t accept the evidence have been convinced into doubt & inaction by those in power who make temporary profit from the polluting of our environment. Fossil fuel profiteers own the politicians who disrupt any progress made by policy. The fact that every Republican candidate for president denied the reality of climate change shows that our “leaders” demonstrate a failure to understand basic science knowledge. The fact that they won anyway indicates our society’s failure to teach Science Literacy.

This issue is not about saving the planet. The Earth will be fine without us.
This is about saving our species. Climate Change/ Global Warming threatens the survival of humanity. This is a test of Nature to see whether we deserve to continue our existence.

Earth is our Home. We continue to trash dump pollute contaminate poison the home planet that our kids will die trying to clean up. It shouldn’t take an overwhelming amount of decades of scientific research to persuade us of simple logic: If we pollute our air & water, we die. If we don’t manage our waste properly & efficiently, our children, grandchildren, and future generations will not survive. If we keep our home clean, we will be healthier and happier.

Remember that by destroying our Oceans, Rainforests, Coral Reefs, and Mangroves, we are removing our Life support systems.

We need to rethink how we use Energy. Remember that fossil fuels are ancient trapped Sun energy in the form of dead animals & plans. We choose to burn these dirty corpses and suffer the byproducts of air pollution & increased heat instead of figuring out better ways to use current sunlight to meet our energy needs. Remember that wind energy is just the motion of heated air molecules rising in a continual process around our globe (plus the Earth’s rotation on its axis and our Sun).
Nature provides for all of our needs. What a stupid illogical irresponsible inefficient unsafe waste of time and energy to drill, frack, extract from tar sands, split unstable atoms, etc. when our abundant solution shines down on us from the sky.

Our entire food system makes the biggest impact on environmental damage. If we stop eating animals and eat food grown locally, we will be healthier and we will have a future:

Stevens, DiCaprio, Reznor & crew have made an excellent, well-paced, well-edited film with an outstanding soundtrack. Check out the full movie for free (perhaps National Geographic has managed to keep its soul despite its new ownership by Foxygen), Before the Flood:

It’s our responsibility to do our best to solve these problems for our kids. When they’re born, I wanna be able to say: Sorry about these problems, but here’s what we’ve done and here’s what we’re working on. Here’s what & whom we support. Here’s high fertile land that we’ve saved for you. Good luck.

We know that it’s too late. The damage has been mounting and escalating since the industrial revolution. So now what? We adapt. We plan & prepare for the impending disasters. We mitigate & migrate for our survival. Let’s live more sustainably and ethically, especially to support the most vulnerable populations and the poorest regions. Let’s get ready for the floods.
